Geoff and Kim-Gai Wright own a home in Western Sydney that felt all wrong.  It was completely back-to-front, with no street presence whatsoever. One failed auction and three real estate agents later, the Wrights were desperate to sell in order to downsize and retire in Queensland.

Selling the house would also mean a huge stress lifted from their shoulders, which is critical for this couple. Both Geoff and Kim-Gai had serious health scares in 2014, resulting in open heart surgeries within three months of each other.

Since purchasing the house in 1986, the Wrights have made a lot of changes to the house, like adding a second story, subdividing their block… and lots of suede painting.  Kim-Gai loves her bold paint colours and suede walls, and even went so far as to paint the doors and door handles with the suede effect too.

Interior

Shaynna had a lot of painting to do, starting with de-sueding the walls, and dissuading Kim-Gai from the outdated trend. Different coloured feature walls in each room, enclosed by contrasting trims, made the interiors feel boxy and disconnected. But by using the same colour scheme throughout the ground floor, Shaynna introduced a sense of flow and cohesiveness. Window treatments across the bedrooms were upgraded with Luxaflex Wood Essence Blinds, in Snow White. The existing blinds conflicted with the varying trim colours so Shaynna took the chance to replace them in modern colours and styles to work with her new scheme.

Removing two small walls in the kitchen/dining area created big changes and a much more spacious feel. The old kitchen was gutted and in its place is a huge open-plan kitchen with island bench. White tones were picked out for the Luxaflex Roller Blind fabrics to follow on with the wall and bench colours, melding in seamlessly to create a clean aesthetic. Glare and light control at the kitchen window was vital and Shaynna made the decision to install dual rollers in translucent and blockout opacities, for functionality and versatility.

Transforming the 5th bedroom into a sitting room – with a wider entrance from the hallway and new French doors to the front deck – enabled a more seamless connection to outside, which was especially important for this house with the pool and garden at the front of the house. Beautiful white Roller Blinds in a translucent Aria fabric helped to partition the interior from the exterior, giving the occupants of the sitting room their privacy when needed and blocking out distractions coming from the outside. Each French door was equipped with its own roller blind, allowing each door to be opened freely on their own and not hindering the entering or exiting of the room.

The rumpus and lounge were both given a huge refresh, starting from the walls, trims, and window coverings. New Wood Essence blinds added a simple yet elegant touch to the rooms, providing the best in privacy and light control, and an excellent view-through to the tree-covered suburban boulevards with its 63mm wide slats. Next door, the study was converted to an additional bedroom, showing a tremendous change with the clutter removed and walls, carpet, furniture and blinds stripped and renewed with a modern look.

Exterior

First on Charlie’s list was addressing the fact that the front entrance looked like the back, and vice-versa. He created a more defined and beautified entry path and fixed the dangerous access to an unfenced pool with new glass fencing.

Charlie changed the pool from an above-ground eye-sore to a more secluded oasis by painting the timber fence in a dark dramatic colour to match the new paving, and adding lush planting between the pool and fence.

The back garden now had more usable space by removing the dying trees and oversized shed, replaced with new turf and a more modern, streamlined garden shed.

Finally, creating a better street presence was necessary for this house – an obvious entrance and visible street number made it much easier for visitors.
